Black History Month Mask Project

African Paper Mask

Objective: Students will learn the difference between positive space
and negative space while creating an African Mask.

Materials: 6/9 inch Duet Paper, Pencil,
Scissors, Glue,
Black 9/12 inch Paper

Step 1. In pencil create a drawing of half
of a mask on the duet paper
(paper with a different color on each side of the paper).
Draw the shape of the face first, leading in
from the left side of the paper.
All shapes need to lead in from the edges of the
face shape or the sides of the paper.

Step 2. Very carefully cut out the shapes
with scissors.
Cut out as one big shape.
All paper will be used (positive and negative space)
so keep all pieces!

Step 3. Lay out all of the shapes onto
the black background.
Arrange it all before glueing.
Reverse the color as you flip the pieces.
½ will be one color (positive space)
and the other ½ will be the second color
(negative space).
Step 4. Glue down all shapes!
Use small dots of glue!
Put your name on the back and place
the finished
mask on the drying rack to dry.
